On behalf of City Council and the Citizens of the City of Portage la Prairie I am pleased to welcome you to the City of Portage la Prairie Web Site.

Located within the heart of the richest agricultural belt in the Province, the economy is driven by a vibrant and progressive agricultural community. In addition, we look to ongoing diversification of the economy. Working diligently with local groups contributing to a quality of life second to none, the City of Portage la Prairie cherishes progress and seizes opportunities that enable our growth.

From the beginning, the site for Portage la Prairie has been ideal for transportation, trade and growth. When Canada's vast western lands were wild and free, this was the place on the Assiniboine River known as "Prairie Portage" - the swiftest overland link between the waters of the Assiniboine and Red River systems and those of Lake Manitoba. Portage la Prairie' s place in the world has grown with times from its rich history to present day bustling business centre ---

Our City has a wide range of activities and interests, such as lodges, service clubs, youth groups, sports groups, senior citizen clubs, music and art. Come and explore our "Island in the City", the Portage and District Arts Centre and Gift Shop, or spend a leisurely day shopping down Saskatchewan Avenue or in one of our three malls. Portage la Prairie is certainly a great place to visit or call home.
