The Portage la Prairie RCMP want to notify residents that door-to-door sales people are frequenting neighbourhoods, and they should use caution when purchasing services. Police have received recent reports of legitimate businesses visiting local homes, and informing residents of “mandatory” upgrades to water filtration, electrical or heating are required. Home owners are reminded that any door-to-door sales representatives should be able to provide proper identification and sales permits from the City of Portage la Prairie. If they are not able to provide either of these, refrain from speaking any further with them.
Any sales agreement or contract provided by the business should be carefully read through. Ensure that all conditions, fees, and terms of payment are documented. Taking your time when reviewing these agreements can save a consumer a lot of headaches, as there is very little criminal recourse for willfully signing a contract. If you believe that a door-to-door sales representative is being rude, pushy or deceitful, there is no reason to allow them into your home. If you feel that your personal or financial safety is at risk, contact your local police detachment immediately. Notifying the police can help you and your community from falling prey to these suspicious business practices.
