National Public Works Week May 21 – 27, 2017

Since the first National Public Works Week celebration in 1960, agencies, municipalities, and regions have used the third full week of May to educate and inform the public about the essential role that public works plays in the quality of their community life. Equally important are promoting the choice of public works as a career choice for the working force of the future and recognizing those whose who currently serve in these crucial public roles.

We value our communities and the role public works professionals play in keeping them safe and functioning smoothly. The 2017 National Public Works Week Poster Theme is “Public Works 17NPWW Poster_SocialMedia_5x7.5 (2)Connects Us”. This year National Public Works Week celebrates the vital role public works plays in connecting us all together.

In the City of Portage la Prairie, public works is handled by our Operations Department. They maintain the City’s infrastructure – roads, drainage, water, sewer, boulevard trees, parks, Crescent Lake, playgrounds, sidewalks and paths, City buildings, and cemeteries. They also provide services such as water supply, sewage treatment, snow clearing, street sweeping, and garbage and recyclable materials collection.

Public Works can be found all around you. Because of public works your garbage is collected; your drinking water is tested to ensure it is safe and clean; the wastewater from your home is treated; and you have safe roads to drive on. So next time you go for a drive, ride on a bike trail, relax in a city park, stop to smell the flowers, enjoy a glass of water, flush the toilet, or have your recyclable material collected, remember – it’s all thanks to public works! Communities depend on public works, and the men and women of the profession are always there and always ready.

Don’t miss your opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the vehicles that make our city go round! The Portage la Prairie Community Revitalization Corporation and the City of Portage la Prairie have partnered to bring you ‘Touch A Truck’ on Thursday, May 25 from 4-6pm at the BDO Centre for the Community. Get in the driver’s seat, toot the horn, flash lights and blare sirens as we feature vehicles and equipment from the RCMP, Portage la Prairie Fire Dept., EF Moon, City Operations, Southport Aerospace and more! Plus, FREE BBQ and ice cream!

Happy National Public Works Week!
