PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE REGIONAL LANDFILL
Residents may deliver waste to the Portage la Prairie Regional Landfill site located 12 km north of the City on PR 240 and 15 km east on PR 227.  Tipping Fees of $42.00 per metric tonne apply to all City Residents and all Commercial Users within the RM of Portage.  Tipping Fees for all users outside the Rural Municipality are $58.00 per metric tonne. Effective January 1, 2010, a $10 per metric tonne Waste Reduction and Recycling Support Levy has applied to most waste deposited in the landfill.

HOURS OF OPERATION FOR THE LANDFILL

Winter Hours –  Effective November 1 to March 31
Tuesday to Saturday 8:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Summer Hours – Effective April 1 to October 31
Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The Portage la Prairie Landfill Site at SW 22-13-5 on PR road #227 was established by the Municipality of Portage la Prairie in 1988.  In 1991 the City of Portage la Prairie joined operation at this site.  This is a Class 1 waste disposal facility currently operated by a joint Board of Directors appointed by the City of Portage la Prairie and the Municipality of Portage la Prairie. The Landfill Site services the City and Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie, the Municipality of Norfolk Treherne and two First Nations communities.  The mandate of the Board is to operate the facility in a self sustaining manner and in management acknowledges their responsibility in the protection and enhancement of the environment.  This site provides for the disposal of household, commercial and industrial waste for the communities it serves.
Tipping Fees

All vehicles hauling in waste are weighed and the tipping fees are applied in accordance with rates set by the Board.

Tarp and Strap All Loads

The Portage la Prairie Regional Landfill reminds you to take the time all of your waste makes it to the Landfill where it can be properly disposed of.  The following reminders will help in accomplishing our goal of clean roadways:

  1. All loads must be tarped and strapped so that nothing comes loose on your way to the landfill.
  2. Monitor your load at all times and stop and secure your load if necessary.
  3. After unloading your waste, be sure all debris and nails are cleaned off and tail gates are closed before pulling away from the dumping area.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in keeping Portage and area clean and a place we all can be proud of.

The Landfill will be enforcing a $25.00 penalty for untarped loads so please take the time to secure your load properly.

Prohibited Waste

The site is prohibited from receiving hazardous wastes i.e., batteries, oil, paint materials and chemicals of any kind.

Appliances Containing Freon

The Portage la Prairie Regional Landfill will be implementing the following program and fees to ensure that all Appliances Containing Freon are handled properly.

  • Appliances with Freon Removed:  The new fee for disposal of appliances with Freon removed and ticketed by a licenced technician will be $9.00.
  • Appliances with Freon:  Any appliances without the Freon removed will be assessed a new fee of $45.00 for disposal at the Landfill.
  • Examples of appliances containing Freon are:  refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and water coolers

The Portage Landfill site operates pursuant to regulations under the Environment Act, Manitoba Regulation 150/91 and Operating Permit No RR-004
