In early 2016, the City of Portage la Prairie will be initiating a water meter replacement program. This program aims to maintain continual accuracy in water billing and enhances meter reading efficiency by automatically sending the meter readings to a remote receiver via radio communication. Neptune Technology Group has been contracted by the Manitoba Water Services Board on behalf of the City of Portage la Prairie to install a new water meter at your property at no direct charge to you.
Installations will begin in early February and will be carried out on an area by area basis until June. This meter replacement program is mandatory, and access to your property to perform the necessary work must be granted to the City’s contractor, per Waterworks By-Law No. 86-6748.
If you have received a new radio transmission water meter within the past 5 years your meter will not be replaced, however a transmitter will be installed on the outside of your house and a wire run to the meter.
THE INSTALLATION PROCESS
As installers move into your area you will receive an informational pamphlet containing all necessary booking information along with details about the program. When you receive this pamphlet, you will have two weeks to schedule an appointment. Please do not call to book your appointment until you receive the informational pamphlet in the mail. If you are a tenant, please contact the building owner when you receive this information.
QUICK AND CONVENIENT
Meter installation appointments can be made to fit your schedule. The work typically takes 45 minutes to complete. These upgrades will allow the City of Portage la Prairie to read the water meter from outside of your house or business, and will generally eliminate the need for the meter reader to gain access to your property to read the meter.
PRIOR TO THE INSTALLATION
Please ensure the area around the existing water meter is clear and accessible. In addition to clearing this space, please leave ample room for the installer to work. Your existing shut-off valve should be located where the water service comes into your house. Check your primary water shut-off valve to make sure it is operable. If it is not operable, you will be required to replace the valve at your cost. You may contact the plumber of your choice to undertake this work in advance of the meter replacement. If the area around the meter is inaccessible or the valve is not operable at the time the meter replacement technician arrives, additional charges may apply for this work. The Water Meter Replacement Program is an important part of the process to ensure equitable billing for all residents and businesses. We look forward to your support and co-operation to make this program a success.
