The City of Portage la Prairie and the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie are pleased to partner with the Province of Manitoba to build a new child care facility in our region creating 74 new child care spaces.
This is part of $70 million in capital funding allocated by the governments of Canada and Manitoba for new child-care facilities, creating more than 1,200 new regulated non-profit child-care spaces across the province. In exchange, the City of Portage la Prairie will provide a minimum of two acres of serviced land, for 15 years rent free. The City and RM of Portage la Prairie will jointly provide support services including snow removal, landscape maintenance and repairs. These support services reduce costs for child-care operators, ensuring long-term sustainability of centres.
“Increasing childcare capacity in our community is not only a needed support for families, but also a key component to unlocking economic growth regionally” said Sharilyn Knox, Mayor of the City of Portage la Prairie.
“We hear often from our residents about the challenges in accessing childcare” said Kam Blight, Reeve of the RM of Portage la Prairie. “We are happy to work with the City of Portage la Prairie to increase access to childcare spaces for families in our region”.
More information, including the location of this new childcare facility will be released in the coming months.
