Manitoba Municipal Elections are held every four years. The general Election Day is always the fourth Wednesday of October.  The next general municipal election is October 26, 2022.

October 26, 2022 is also the election of School Board Trustees.

The City of Portage la Prairie and the Portage la Prairie School Board have decided to have a joint election and have appointed Diane Van Aert as the Senior Election Official for the City of Portage la Prairie.

Notice is hereby given that the voters of the City of Portage la Prairie will be taken to elect One Mayor and Six Councillors from the following duly nominated candidates:

Voting places will be open for voting on Wednesday the 26th day of October, 2022 between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. at:

Where you vote is determined by where you live and/or own property in the City of Portage la Prairie.  See our website for details or call 204 239-8337 to find out where you vote.

IDENTIFICATION MAY BE REQUIRED BEFORE BEING ALLOWED TO VOTE.  A person may be required to produce one piece of government issued photo identification (for example – driver’s license or passport) or at least two other documents that provide proof of identity.

ADVANCE VOTING

For the purpose of accommodating persons who are qualified to vote, but who have reason to believe they will be absent or otherwise unable to attend their proper voting place on Election Day, an advance voting opportunity will be located at the Herman Prior Centre, 40 Royal Road North and will be open on Saturday, October 15, 2022. between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

MOBILE VOTING

For the purpose of accommodating persons who are qualified to vote, but reside at a health care facility, a mobile voting station will be set up at the following health care facilities on Election Day:  Manitoba Development Centre, Portage General Hospital, Douglas Campbell Lodge, Lions Prairie Manor and Dufferin Villa. Times will be posted at each facility. Please note that Mobile Voting is for residents/patients only. Staff members must vote at the poll in which they reside.

APPLICATION TO VOTE BY SEALED ENVELOPE

A voter who is unable to go in person to either the regular or advance poll may apply in person, in writing, or by fax to the Senior Election Official at City Hall, 97 Saskatchewan Avenue East, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

In Person

If applying in person, a voter may apply between September 28 and October 23, 2022. A voter applying in person may pick up a sealed envelope ballot package at the time of application.

Mail or Fax

If applying by mail or fax, a voter may apply between July 28 and October 23, 2022. The application must state the applicant’s name, address and telephone number. The application must also include legible photocopies of identification and a declaration of eligibility. A voter applying by mail or fax will receive a sealed envelope ballot package by regular post, if the application is received by the S.E.O. 12 or more days before the election. If the application is received less than 12 days before the election, the voter may make alternative arrangements with the S.E.O. to have the ballot delivered to ensure it can be returned by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. This could include designating a family member to pick up the ballot package. The S.E.O. may require the family member to produce identification and take oath as to his/her relationship with the voter.

Where you vote is determined by where you live and/or own property in the City of Portage la Prairie. Voting stations will be located at the Herman Prior Activity Centre, MNP Building and Red River College. See the map below or enter your address into our Poll Finder to see where you vote. For more information on where to vote, call the SEO at 204-239-8337.

If you live on one of the streets dividing the voting districts, where you vote will depend on what side of the street you live on.  For example, if you live on the north side of Saskatchewan Avenue you will vote at the poll station in District 1.  If you live on the south side of Saskatchewan Avenue and west of 3rd Street SE / River Road you will vote at the poll station in District 2. If you live on the south side of Saskatchewan Avenue and east of 3rd Street SE / River Road you will vote at the poll station in District 3.

All voting stations are accessible and will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Alternative Voting Options

Options are available for voters who may not be able to vote on Election Day.

Advance Voting

Sealed Envelope Voting

Voters List

The deadline to make changes to the Voters List was September 20th. You can still vote if your name is not on the list, but you will be asked to present valid identification and proof of residency or property ownership in the City of Portage la Prairie.

Voter Eligibility

You are eligible to vote if you are:

  • A Canadian citizen;
  • At least 18 years of age on Election Day;
  • A resident (or registered landowner) of the City of Portage la Prairie for at least six months prior to Election Day (since April 26, 2022).

You may be asked to show identification and/or proof of property ownership in the City of Portage la Prairie. Acceptable identification includes an official document issued by the federal, provincial or municipal government that contains the voter’s name, address and photograph or at least 2 documents that provide evidence satisfactory to the election official.

Notice of Registration of Prospective Candidates for the 2022 General Municipal Election

**Registration rules do not apply to School Trustee Candidates**

The general election will be held on October 26, 2022.  Prospective municipal election candidates must register with the Senior Election Official (SEO) during the registration period before they may begin to accept contributions, incur expenses, fundraise or borrow money for their campaign.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that I will be receiving candidate registrations:

  • For the office of Mayor: Between May 1, 2022 and September 20, 2022
  • For the office of Councillor: Between June 30, 2022 and September 20, 2022

Nominations may be filed in person or by an official agent at the above location, on the date and hours specified. Nomination papers and/or candidate’s declaration of qualification may be obtained upon request from City Hall, 97 Saskatchewan Avenue East.

Nomination papers not accompanied by the required documents and not properly filed shall be rejected.
