Manitoba Municipal Elections are held every four years. The general Election Day is always the fourth Wednesday of October.  The next general municipal election is October 26, 2022.

October 26, 2022 is also the election of School Board Trustees.

The City of Portage la Prairie and the Portage la Prairie School Board have decided to have a joint election and have appointed Diane Van Aert as the Senior Election Official for the City of Portage la Prairie.

Any person who is eligible to vote in municipal elections in the City of Portage la Prairie can have their name added to the Voters List or have any information about the voter on the Voters List corrected. You are eligible to vote if you are:

  • A Canadian citizen;
  • At least 18 years of age on Election Day; and
  • A resident of the City (OR a registered owner of land in the City) for at least six months on Election Day. (Note: Non-resident voting does not apply to School Division elections.)

Any person can request to have his or her name and address obscured from the Voters List.  A person whose name has been obscured will receive a Personal Security Certificate and identification number. That person may only vote by Sealed Envelope Ballot and cannot vote in person at the regular or advance voting places. To implement the above, complete Form 8A – Application for Personal Security Protection, a written request must be submitted to the Senior Election Official, in person, by e-mail, fax or mail to the address below.

Where you vote is determined by where you live and/or own property in the City of Portage la Prairie. Voting Station locations will be posted here when they are determined. Voting stations will open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m on Election Day.

Alternative Voting Options

Options are available for voters who may not be able to vote on Election Day.

Advance Voting

For the purpose of accommodating persons who are qualified to vote, but who have reason to believe that they will be absent or otherwise unable to attend their proper voting place on Election Day, an advance voting opportunity will be located at the Herman Prior Centre, 40 Royal Rd N, on Saturday October 15, 2022 from 8:00 am – 8:00 pm.

Sealed Envelope Voting

Any voter who is unable to go in person to the voting place, or vote in advance, may apply in person, in writing, or by fax to vote by sealed envelope. The Application to Vote by Sealed Envelope can be mailed to the Senior Election Official at City Hall, 97 Saskatchewan Avenue East, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday or emailed to dvanaert@city-plap.com.

Mail or Fax
If applying by mail or fax, a voter may apply between July 28, 2022 and October 23, 2022. The application must state the applicant’s name, address and telephone number. The application must also include legible photocopies of identification and a declaration of eligibility. A voter applying by mail or fax will receive a sealed envelope ballot package by regular post, if the application is received by the S.E.O. 12 or more days before the election. If the application is received less than 12 days before the election, the voter may make alternative arrangements with the S.E.O. to have the ballot delivered to ensure it can be returned by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. This could include designating a family member to pick up the ballot package. The S.E.O. may require the family member to produce identification and take oath as to his/her relationship with the voter.

In Person
If applying in person, a voter may apply between September 28, 2022 and October 23, 2022. A voter applying in person may pick up a sealed envelope ballot package at the time of application.

Mobile Voting

For the purpose of accommodating persons who are qualified to vote, but reside at a health care facility, a mobile voting station may be set up at the Manitoba Development Centre, Portage General Hospital, Douglas Campbell Lodge and Lions Prairie Manor on Election Day. The times the mobile voting station will be at each location will be announced.

Notice of Registration of Prospective Candidates for the 2022 General Municipal Election

**Registration rules do not apply to School Trustee Candidates**

The general election will be held on October 26, 2022.  Prospective municipal election candidates must register with the Senior Election Official (SEO) during the registration period before they may begin to accept contributions, incur expenses, fundraise or borrow money for their campaign.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that I will be receiving candidate registrations:

  • For the office of Mayor: Between May 1, 2022 and September 20, 2022
  • For the office of Councillor: Between June 30, 2022 and September 20, 2022
