Why This Project Was Started

Public transportation introduces numerous benefits to a community. Having public transportation options increases community members independence and transportation equity. In addition to increasing access to vital sites and services such as schools, medical facilities and work, transit is considered an important component of strategies aimed at addressing climate change in urban centres.

Community members from Portage la Prairie have been expressing an interest in transit for several years. In 2015 the Portage Community Revitalization Corporation (PCRC) began studying the need for transit and released a report that outlined these needs and reviewed potential models for public transportation. In addition, the report recommended that a feasibility study would be a good first step towards determining the best public transportation solutions.

In the spring of 2021, the City engaged engineering firm, WSP, to conduct a transit feasibility study.

The purpose of the study is to identify and assess the feasibility of public transit options in the City of Portage la Prairie, including potential service options to Poplar Bluff Industrial Park and adjacent communities.

Project Timeline

Summer 2021 Public Engagement

Public engagement is an important component of the study and two phases of engagement have been identified.

The purpose of Phase 1 Engagement is to inform the public and various key stakeholders about the scope and intent of the project and to gather insight on where they are travelling to and from and what their transportation needs currently are.

Once that information is collected and analyzed to produce the findings of the feasibility study, we will again engage the public and key stakeholders to present the options recommended and to obtain feedback on the options (Phase 2 Engagement – September 2021).

We want to hear from you about your transportation needs! Please start by filling out the online survey linked below which will ask you basic questions regarding your day-to-day travel destinations.

The survey will close end of day, Sunday July 11, 2021 – Portage la Prairie Transportation Needs Survey

If you have any questions or would like to provide additional feedback, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Engagement Lead on the project, Meagan Boles, at 204-259-1628 or by email at Meagan.Boles@wsp.com.
