City of Portage la Prairie Welcomes Jonathan Hunter as New Fire Chief

The City of Portage la Prairie is pleased to announce the appointment of Jonathan Hunter as Fire Chief.

Jonathan will join the City on September 8, 2026, bringing more than 35 years of emergency services experience. Most recently, he served with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service as Director of the Fire Rescue Academy, PPE Branch and Breathing Air Unit, where he provided leadership in firefighter training, operational readiness, and emergency service delivery.

As Fire Chief, Jonathan will lead the Portage Fire Department and work closely with firefighters, City administration, regional partners, and the community to support public safety and emergency response services.

"Jonathan brings extensive operational and leadership experience, along with a thoughtful and collaborative approach that stood out throughout the recruitment process," said City Manager Nicole Chychota. "We are pleased to welcome him to Portage la Prairie and look forward to the leadership and perspective he will bring to our Fire Department and our organization."

Jonathan said he is looking forward to meeting the members of the department, learning more about the community, and building on the strong foundation already in place.

"After 35 years in emergency services, I've learned a department is only as strong as its people, so my focus as Chief is simple: performance and well-being. I want our firefighters exceptionally trained, proud of their work, and looking forward to their next shift. And I'm not arriving with all the answers. The people here know their community, their station, and their craft, and my first job is to listen. Together we'll build on the strong foundation that's already in place," said Hunter.

Mayor Sharilyn Knox welcomed Jonathan on behalf of City Council.

"Council is pleased to welcome Jonathan Hunter to Portage la Prairie. Our Fire Department provides an essential service to our community, and we look forward to working with Jonathan as he leads the department in serving the residents of Portage la Prairie," said Mayor Knox.
