Emergency Shelter for Stranded Travellers - CLOSED

UPDATE: Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 12:30 pm.

The Trans‑Canada Highway has reopened. As a result, the emergency shelter at the Herman Prior Center is now closed.

Thank you to everyone who assisted stranded travellers during the storm, and please travel safely.


The City of Portage la Prairie will be opening the Herman Prior Center (40 Royal Road N.) as an emergency shelter to welcome stranded travellers due to the winter storm and closure of the Trans-Canada Highway.

The Center will open its doors at approximately 6:30 PM tonight, January 16th, 2026.
