We're Hiring - Labourer – Waterworks (Seasonal - Watermain Flushing / Night Shift)
The City of Portage la Prairie is accepting resumes for a Seasonal Waterworks Labourer for the 2026 season. This position includes assisting with general waterworks duties and participation in the annual watermain and hydrant flushing program, which requires night shift work for approximately eight (8) weeks from mid-June- August. Remainder of Work term is day shift.
Under the close supervision of designated City staff, labourers perform a variety of manual labour tasks related to waterworks and municipal operations. Labourers may be required to work at various City facilities and locations.
Duties Include (but are not limited to):
- Assisting with watermain flushing operations, including hydrant operation
- Supporting waterworks maintenance and operational activities
- Performing manual labour tasks outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Operating basic tools and equipment safely
- Adhering to established safety policies and procedures
- Working effectively as part of a crew during overnight shifts
Qualifications:
- Minimum completion of Grade 10
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence is required
- Ability to work overnight shifts for the full 8-week watermain flushing period
- Physically capable of performing manual labour
Hours of Work:
- Night shift work is required during the flushing program (Sunday- Thursday evenings, 10:00 pm- 6:30 am)
- Remainder of work term is Monday- Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30pm
Rate of Pay:
- $21.00 per hour
- This is a unionized position and is subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable collective agreement, including any subsequent amending agreements
